Sony WH-1000XM6
The new noise-cancelling benchmark, and Sony fixed the one thing everyone hated: it folds again. The quietest ANC you can buy, 30-hour battery, superb calls. The only real catch is the $699 price.

Noise-cancelling headphones in Australia are bought primarily by daily commuters (train, plane, open-plan offices) and remote workers who need to focus through household noise. The right pick depends on which noise environment you actually face, not on which spec sheet looks impressive.
This list ranks the noise-cancelling headphones I would recommend for Australian buyers in 2026. The Sony WH-1000XM6 leads on raw active noise cancellation (ANC) and now folds again, fixing the one real knock on the old XM5. Bose QC Ultra leads on value and call clarity for video meetings. Apple AirPods Max leads on Apple ecosystem integration. The category has matured to the point where any premium pick is competent; the differences are at the margins.

Neck-and-neck with the Sony XM6 for best ANC headphones: Sony wins on call quality, battery and outright noise cancelling, the Bose wins on spatial audio and price. Both are excellent at current Australian prices.
The value champion, 60-hour battery life, audiophile 42mm drivers, foldable design, and now under $320. ANC isn't quite Sony/Bose level, but everything else overdelivers at this price.
The previous-gen champion still holds up remarkably well. If you don't need the absolute latest ANC and want to save hundreds over the current XM6, this remains an excellent buy.
