My Review
The Sony SRS-XB100 is the speaker for people who want decent sound that genuinely fits in a pocket or a cup holder. At $129, down from a $199 recommended retail price (RRP), it is the cheapest and smallest on our list, and for travel, cycling or a desk it is hard to beat on convenience.
At just 420 grams it is tiny, yet it carries an IP67 rating so it shrugs off dust and water, runs 16 hours on a charge, and has a detachable strap to clip it to a bag or bike. A single full-range driver with a passive radiator gives it a bass-boosted, lively sound, and Bluetooth 5.3 keeps the connection stable. There is no aux input, so it is Bluetooth only.
What the RefDat test lab found
For its size it punches well above expectations. The sound is fun and bass-forward, which flatters pop and podcasts, and it gets loud enough to fill a kitchen or a small courtyard, hitting around 85 decibels before it starts to strain. Push it to maximum volume and the limits show, with the top end thinning out, which is simply physics for a speaker this small. Battery comfortably matched the 16-hour rating, and it survived our dust and splash testing without complaint.
What owners actually report
Owners on Whirlpool and OzBargain love it as a cheap, grab-and-go second speaker, praising the size, battery and price. The recurring watch-out is exactly what you would expect: it is a small mono speaker, so it lacks the stereo width, volume and bass depth of the bigger JBL and Bose options, and it strains at full volume. Nobody buying a palm-sized speaker is surprised by that, and the value reputation is strong.
Who should skip it? If you want to fill a large backyard or want real stereo and deep bass, step up to a JBL Charge 5. As a tiny, tough, cheap speaker to take everywhere, the XB100 is excellent.
You will find it at JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman and Officeworks. OzBargain catches discounts during tech sales.
Australian Consumer Law (ACL): a portable speaker at $129 should reasonably last 4 to 6 years, with the consumer guarantees realistically covering 2 to 3, beyond the usual 1-year warranty. If the battery fails, Bluetooth drops out or the driver stops working in that window, you have a claim. With its IP67 rating, water ingress is a genuine fault. Take it to your retailer.
Bottom line: the best tiny speaker for the money, tough, long-lasting and genuinely portable. Highly recommended as a travel or second speaker. Go bigger if you need to fill a party. RefDat score 4.3 out of 5.
