Portable speakers are brilliant for taking tunes with you to the beach, camping, or just around the house. The good ones have solid battery life, decent sound, and won't break if you drop them. There's a tonne of rubbish out there though, so it's worth getting a decent one rather than gambling on a cheap option that'll die in six months.
JBL's Charge 5 is my pick for the best all-rounder. It's tough, the sound's actually good, and the battery lasts forever. If you've got a bit more cash, Bose's SoundLink Flex is stunning - it sounds brilliant, feels like it'll outlive you, and it's waterproof enough for proper outdoor abuse. Ultimate Ears' Boom 4 is great if you want something fun and durable, though the sound's not as clean as the JBL.
Sony's SRS-XB100 is tiny and brilliant for travel - seriously compact but punches above its weight. I reckon the sweet spot for portable speakers is between three hundred and five hundred bucks. Cheaper and you're compromising on sound or durability. More expensive and you're paying for features you won't use. Whatever you pick, don't cheap out on this one. A good portable speaker gets used loads and makes your life genuinely better.
