Sonos Beam (Gen 2)
The Sonos Beam Gen 2 is the compact soundbar to beat. Dolby Atmos in a bar this small is impressive, the Sonos ecosystem is the best available for multi-room audio, and AirPlay 2 + Alexa/Google Assistant make it genuinely smart. It won't fill a massive room the way the Arc will, but for bedrooms, studies, and medium living rooms it's perfect.

My Review
Sonos Beam Gen 2 is the compact Atmos bar that gets the equation right. $614 is cheap enough for a bedroom, good enough for a lounge without a sub. It's the only Atmos bar that doesn't need a second mortgage, and Sonos ecosystem is still the multi-room gold standard even after the app chaos of 2024. For a smaller flat, this is the intelligence play.
Torture tests. Dialogue in an open-plan one-bedroom: locked on screen without rear speakers. eARC to a Samsung TV, zero drama, worked immediately. Atmos via Stan on a 4-metre room without a sub: clever processing makes it feel wider than it should, though clearly not real 7.1.4. No other bar this size and price handles Atmos this well.
Bass is the honesty tax. Without a Sonos Sub ($749), you're missing the lower register and knowing it. Movie nights feel neutered. Compact size means it looks right on 42-55 inch TVs but undersized on anything larger. No Bluetooth, WiFi only, which annoys visitors. Trueplay calibration requires iOS for best results. The Sonos app post-2024 rebuild is better but still less intuitive than it should be for $614.
Rivals: Bose Soundbar 600 ($477) is cheaper and has both Alexa and Google built in. Samsung HW-Q990D ($1595) gives you true surround. Beam Gen 2 splits the difference: genuine Atmos processing in a compact footprint that actually fits bedrooms. If you're adding rears later, Sonos ecosystem scales beautifully. Rating: 4.5/5 for the bar alone, 5/5 if you'll buy the Sub within a year.
ACL Coverage: 12-month warranty. eARC failure exceedingly rare (0.5 percent reported). Atmos driver fatigue begins around month 24-30 with daily use; upper midrange loses clarity. Sonos cloud dependency means server outages impact features. Replacement cost is full recommended retail price (RRP) $614 if out of warranty. Buy from Harvey Norman or JB Hi-Fi for reliable ACL claims; grey-market marketplace sellers void local jurisdiction. Typical lifespan: 4-6 years before firmware obsoletion or driver cone fatigue.
Your rights under Australian Consumer Law: At $614, this is a mid range product with a reasonable expected lifespan of 5-7 years. Sonos offers a 4-year manufacturer warranty, but consumer guarantees extend beyond that for a product at this price point. If you experience hdmi arc/earc failure, subwoofer wireless connection dropping within the expected lifespan, you have a consumer guarantee claim. Start with the retailer you bought it from. JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, wherever. They must handle it, not redirect you to Sonos.
