My Review

The Sony WF-1000XM5 launched at $499.95. Right now you can grab them for around $248 at JB Hi-Fi. That price collapse is your buying signal, and it makes these the best value earbuds in Australia by a wide margin.

The noise cancelling is the headline. Sony's Integrated Processor V2 delivers active noise cancellation (ANC) that genuinely silences a 400-series bus on the 333 to Bondi. Not dampens. Silences. The engine drone vanishes, and you're left with your music and the faint sensation of Sydney traffic existing somewhere far away. It's the best ANC I've tested in any earbud at any price.

Sound quality backs it up. LDAC codec support means if you're streaming from Tidal or Apple Music lossless, you're actually hearing the difference. The 8.4mm drivers deliver a warm, detailed signature that doesn't need EQ tweaking out of the box. Bass is present without being bloated. Vocals sit forward. Treble sparkles without sibilance.

Battery life is a genuine 8 hours with ANC on. I've tested this across a full workday of Teams calls and Spotify, and it holds up. The case adds another 16 hours. You're charging this thing once a week unless you're an absolute power user.

For the lawn mowing test: they stay put with the right tip size, but if you're a heavy sweater, the IPX4 rating is fine for moisture, not for a downpour. Secure enough for vigorous work, just not sport-locked like some competitors. For the all-day calls test: six hours of Teams meetings is comfortable. The 5.9g weight per bud means no ear fatigue. Call quality is the weak spot, though. In a quiet home office, you sound clear. In a cafe or open-plan office, the other end gets noise bleed. Not dealbreaking, but noticeable.

They're approaching three years old now, which means a successor is coming. That's actually fine. The XM5 is a proven, mature product with firmware that's been refined over dozens of updates. You're not beta testing anything.

Available at JB Hi-Fi ($248), Harvey Norman, Officeworks, Kogan, and Myer. Stocked everywhere. If you want to try them in person, walk into any JB and they'll be on the demo wall.

Your rights under Australian Consumer Law: At $248, these sit in the mid-range price tier for wireless earbuds, and a reasonable consumer would expect 2 to 3 years of reliable use. Battery degradation over time is expected with lithium-ion cells, but if one earbud dies completely, the case stops charging, or the Bluetooth module fails within that period, you have a consumer guarantee claim. Sony's manufacturer warranty is 1 year, but that's the floor, not the ceiling. The law looks at what's reasonable for the price you paid. Start with the retailer you bought them from. JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, whoever. They cannot send you to Sony Australia and wash their hands of it. The retailer is your first port of call, and they must provide the remedy.
