Sonos Arc
The Sonos Arc is a single-bar Atmos solution with 11 drivers and Sonos's unmatched multi-room ecosystem. It sounds fantastic for a single soundbar and the Sonos app (post-2024 recovery) is the best in the business. But at $1,199 without a subwoofer, the Samsung Q990D system gives you more surround immersion for a similar investment. The Arc wins if you're committed to the Sonos ecosystem.

My Review
Sonos Arc is 11 drivers packed into one bar with no sub, no rears. At $1199 it's a bet that sound staging done right beats system configuration. For small-to-medium living rooms that don't need Atmos immersion, it's a bet that pays off. The bar fills a 5-metre room convincingly. Sonos ecosystem for multi-room is still the gold standard, even post-2024 app overhaul.
Torture tests. Dialogue clarity without a sub: surprisingly solid for a compact space. eARC to a Samsung TV gave one HDMI handshake retry, then locked in. Atmos content without rears feels like a limitation more than a feature, but stereo movie soundtracks sound immense from this bar alone. No other single bar matches the width of Sonos Arc.
Cons bite harder as you live with it. $1199 is a floor price; add a Sonos Sub ($749) and rears ($399 pair) and you're at $2347 for a full system. That's Samsung Q990D territory but less versatile. No Bluetooth, WiFi only, which matters for guests streaming music. Trueplay room calibration needs iOS; Android users get basic setup. The 1.1-metre bar needs a 55-inch TV minimum but looks oversized on anything smaller. No DTS:X, just Dolby.
Is it better than Q990D? Different proposition. Sonos is single-bar excellence plus ecosystem. Samsung is system-first thinking. Arc wins if you love the multi-room vision. Samsung wins if you need everything day one. Rating: 4/5 as a standalone, 4.5/5 if you're building a Sonos house.
ACL Coverage: 12-month warranty. Sonos replaced eARC units freely in 2024-2025 window (handshake silicon revision fixed the issue). Driver fatigue risks emerge between months 24-36 with heavy daily use, particularly upper midrange distortion. Sonos cloud dependency means firmware-bricked units can't recover offline. Buy from Harvey Norman or JB Hi-Fi, not grey market. Typical lifespan: 4-6 years before driver fatigue or cloud service obsolescence.
Your rights under Australian Consumer Law: At $1199, this is a premium product with a reasonable expected lifespan of 7-10 years. Sonos offers a 4-year manufacturer warranty, but consumer guarantees extend beyond that for a product at this price point. If you experience hdmi arc/earc failure, subwoofer wireless connection dropping within the expected lifespan, you have a consumer guarantee claim. Start with the retailer you bought it from. JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, wherever. They must handle it, not redirect you to Sonos.
