Samsung HW-Q990D
The Samsung HW-Q990D is the best all-in-one surround system you can buy without going to separates. 11.1.4 channels means genuine overhead Atmos from up-firing and rear speakers, no virtual processing tricks. Q-Symphony pairs it intelligently with Samsung TVs. At $1,595 on sale it's a premium purchase, but it replaces what would be a $3,000+ AV receiver and speaker setup.

My Review
If you want the best Dolby Atmos soundbar system you can buy in Australia, it's this one. The Samsung HW-Q990D is a true 11.1.4 channel system with wireless rear speakers and a subwoofer all included in the box. No add-ons needed. No separate purchases. Everything for $1,595.
That 11.1.4 configuration is not virtual processing pretending to be surround. It's 22 discrete speakers firing in every direction, including four upward-firing drivers that bounce Atmos height channels off your ceiling. For a movie night, the surround effect is genuinely convincing without rear speaker stands, without running cables across the room, without any of the hassle that kept people away from proper surround sound for decades.
Dialogue clarity in an open-plan living and kitchen layout is excellent. Samsung's SpaceFit Sound calibrates the system to your room using a built-in microphone. In testing, voices cut through clearly even with the kitchen rangehood running two rooms over. For the eARC connection test, the Q990D paired with a Samsung TV via HDMI eARC without drama. Q-Symphony (which syncs the soundbar with your Samsung TV's built-in speakers for extra spatial depth) worked immediately. With a non-Samsung TV, eARC still works, but you lose Q-Symphony. Worth knowing before you buy.
The 10-inch wireless subwoofer delivers bass that you feel in your chest during action scenes. For Stan, Disney+, and Binge content in Atmos, the system handles the format natively. Kayo sports broadcasts sound excellent too, with crowd noise wrapping around the room during NRL and cricket.
The wireless rear speakers are compact and sit on a shelf or side table. Battery isn't a concern because they're powered (plugged into the wall), not battery-operated like the JBL Bar 1000's detachable rears. This is a permanent setup. If you want portable rears, look at JBL.
The soundbar itself is 1.2 metres wide. It looks right under a 65-inch TV but awkward under a 55-inch. Measure your TV stand before committing. The SmartThings app handles setup and EQ but isn't as refined as the Sonos app. Functional, not elegant.
The main competitor is the JBL Bar 1000 at a similar price. The JBL has clever detachable rears and a marginally larger sub, but the Samsung's 11.1.4 channel count and Q-Symphony integration give it the edge if you own a Samsung TV. If you don't own a Samsung TV and don't plan to, the JBL is worth serious consideration.
Available at JB Hi-Fi, Samsung Australia, and Costco Australia. Costco sometimes runs it $100-$200 below other retailers.
Your rights under Australian Consumer Law: At $1,595, this is a premium soundbar system, and a reasonable consumer would expect 7 to 10 years of reliable use. Samsung's 1-year warranty is the floor, not the ceiling. At this price, if the wireless rear speakers lose connection, the subwoofer dies, the HDMI eARC port fails, or any of the 22 drivers give up within 5 years, you have a strong consumer guarantee claim. A $1,595 product is expected to last. Start with the retailer. JB Hi-Fi, Samsung Australia, Costco, whoever sold it to you. They must handle the claim, not redirect you to Samsung's overseas support line.
