Pros & Cons
What I Like
- $999 starting with M4 chip and 16GB RAM is the best value Apple has ever offered on a Mac
- 127mm cube form factor is the smallest Mac ever; fits in any space
- Effectively silent under typical workloads; no audible fan
- Three Thunderbolt 4 ports (or Thunderbolt 5 on M4 Pro) is generous for the size
- Front-mounted USB-C and headphone jack for the first time on a Mac mini
Could Be Better
- 256GB base SSD is genuinely too small in 2026; budget the $300 jump to 512GB at minimum
- Display, keyboard, and mouse are all separate purchases; budget another $800-1,500 for a setup
- M5 Mac mini expected June 2026; buying now means a wait until refresh
- M4 Pro at $1,599 is harder to justify than M4 Max in Mac Studio for most pro buyers; consider Mac Studio instead
My Review
The Mac mini M4 is the best-value Mac Apple has ever sold and the best-value desktop computer on the market in 2026. Starting at $999 with the M4 chip and 16GB RAM standard, it is the desktop I recommend without hesitation to anyone who needs a Mac for office, web development, light creative work, photo editing, or as a home server. The base configuration genuinely needs no upgrades except the storage tier.
The headline change is what Apple did at M4 launch (November 2024) that they should have done years earlier: 16GB unified memory as the standard base. The M3 generation Mac mini shipped with 8GB base, which was the same insulting memory budget Apple charged $1,099 for. The M4 generation doubled it to 16GB at the same starting price. For typical Mac workloads (web, documents, photos, light video editing, multiple browser tabs, a code project or two open at once), 16GB is the right amount. You will notice the absence of the upcharge.
The form factor is the second under-rated change. The M4 Mac mini shrank from the previous generation's 197mm-square enclosure (the same as Mac Studio) to a 127mm cube, almost half the footprint. It fits in any desk space, hides easily behind a monitor, and weighs 670 grams. For people who care about visual desk minimalism, this is the cleanest desktop computer ever made.
The M4 Pro option ($1,599 base) adds 12 CPU cores, 16 GPU cores, 24GB RAM standard, and Thunderbolt 5 instead of Thunderbolt 4. The upgrade is worth it for buyers who specifically need more memory bandwidth or compute, but for most who would consider it, the Mac Studio M4 Max at $2,999 is a better choice if you need real pro power. The M4 Pro Mac mini is the awkward middle option; M4 base for the typical buyer or Mac Studio M4 Max for the pro buyer makes a clearer story.
The 256GB base SSD is the one place the value story breaks. After macOS, Microsoft 365, Adobe Creative Cloud, your Photos library and your Mail database, you are at 80GB used before you have stored a single project. Apple's $300 jump to 512GB is annoying but at this price point essentially required. Budget $1,299 for the practical entry point with 512GB storage.
The setup cost is the second budget consideration. The Mac mini is just the box. A monitor (you do not need a Studio Display; a $400 27-inch 4K from LG, Dell, or BenQ is fine), a keyboard (Apple Magic Keyboard $179, Logitech MX Keys $189, or third-party for $80), and a mouse or trackpad ($129-179) bring total setup cost to $1,500 to $2,500 depending on choices. This is still excellent value for a Mac.
The M5 Mac mini question. Apple's M5 generation Mac mini is expected at WWDC June 2026 per multiple supply-chain reports, with potential slip to October if RAM/NAND shortages constrain production. Buyers should consider: the M4 Mac mini is still actively sold and supported through 2030+, the M5 will be 25 percent faster but you will not feel that on workloads the M4 already handles in real time. Buy now if you have the work to do; wait until June 2026 if you can defer.
The Australian buyer context. JB Hi-Fi runs the Mac mini M4 at $949 to $999 routinely. Apple Education Store at $899 is the year-round price leader. The Good Guys, Officeworks, and Costco all track JB. Cellular models do not exist for desktops (irrelevant note for completeness). AppleCare+ at $179 for 3 years is excellent value on a daily-driver desktop and recommended.
The trade-off versus the Mac Studio. The Studio M4 Max at $2,999 is genuinely 3 to 4 times faster for sustained pro workloads, has more RAM ceiling (128GB vs 32GB on M4 mini), more ports, and the chassis-quality benefits of silent operation under heavy load. For typical office and light pro use, Mac mini M4 wins on price by $2,000 and does the work fine. For pro creative work, Mac Studio wins. The mini is right for 80 percent of buyers.
The trade-off versus a Windows mini-PC. Beelink, Minisforum, and Geekom sell Windows mini-PCs at similar prices with more RAM upgradability and user-replaceable storage, plus 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD configurations under $1,000. They run Windows. They do not run macOS. They do not have the Apple ecosystem. For Windows-required work, Beelink SER8 or similar is a better buy than a Mac mini at the same price. For macOS work, Mac mini M4 wins.
