The only Android flagship tablet still genuinely competing with iPad Pro. 14.6" AMOLED with anti-reflective coating, S Pen in the box (Apple charges $229 extra), IP68 water resistance. Right answer if you live in Android; otherwise iPad Pro and Surface Pro are the better picks.

Pros & Cons

What I Like

  • 14.6" AMOLED at 930 nits with anti-reflective matte coating is the best outdoor-readable tablet display on the market
  • S Pen included in the box; Apple charges $229 for Pencil Pro, Microsoft charges $180 for Slim Pen 2
  • IP68 water resistance is unique in the premium tablet category; you can use it in the rain or by the pool
  • microSD up to 2TB is real expandable storage; iPad Pro and Surface Pro do not have it
  • DeX desktop mode runs a near-Windows-like multi-window experience when connected to a monitor

Could Be Better

  • Android tablet app ecosystem still lags iPadOS for pro creative apps (Procreate has no equal, Affinity tablet apps less mature)
  • MediaTek Dimensity 9400+ is competitive in benchmarks but software optimisation lags Apple Silicon under sustained load
  • Samsung's One UI on tablets has improved but is still busier than iPadOS or vanilla Android
  • Book Cover Keyboard ($349) is the iPad-equivalent upcharge if you want a full typing experience
  • Samsung's longevity track record on tablets is weaker than Apple's; expect 5-6 years of useful life versus iPad Pro's 7-plus

My Review

The Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra is the only Android flagship tablet still genuinely worth the iPad Pro money in 2026. Lenovo, ASUS, and Google's own Pixel Tablet are not in the same league at this price tier. If you have committed to the Android ecosystem (you carry a Galaxy phone, you use Samsung DeX, your work setup is Android-first), the Tab S11 Ultra is the right answer. If you have not, the iPad Pro and the Surface Pro are both better picks because the software ecosystems are stronger.

The 14.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display is the most distinctive hardware feature. 930 nits typical brightness with HDR peaks higher, 120Hz refresh, full DCI-P3 colour, and (the part nobody else does) an anti-reflective matte coating that genuinely works. Reading outdoors in bright Australian sun is comfortable in a way no glossy tablet can match. The iPad Pro tandem organic LED (OLED) is brighter in HDR peaks and has perfect blacks, but the iPad's glossy glass reflects everything in a north-facing room at 11am. The Tab S11 Ultra's matte coating fixes that, and for outdoor and bright-room reading the difference is real.

The S Pen is the under-rated value point. Apple charges $229 for the Pencil Pro, Microsoft charges $180 for the Slim Pen 2, and Samsung includes the S Pen in the box at no extra cost. The pen is excellent: 4,096 levels of pressure, tilt detection, palm rejection on the Tab S11 surface, and Samsung's Air Actions for gesture control. For digital art, Apple Pencil Pro is still the gold standard for the gesture features (squeeze, barrel roll, haptic feedback), but for handwriting, marking up PDFs, and casual sketching, the S Pen is genuinely competitive and free.

The IP68 water and dust resistance rating is unique in the premium tablet category. iPad Pro and Surface Pro have no IP rating; a glass of water on the kitchen counter is a $2,000 problem. The Tab S11 Ultra survives splashes, rain, and accidental immersion in shallow water. For anyone using a tablet in the kitchen, by the pool, or in mixed indoor-outdoor environments, this is a real durability advantage.

The MediaTek Dimensity 9400+ chip is the new generation of MediaTek flagship silicon and lands within 5 to 10 percent of the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy in benchmarks. CPU performance is competitive with the iPad Pro M5 in productivity work but trails by 20 to 30 percent on sustained creative loads where Apple Silicon's GPU and unified memory architecture pull ahead. The 12GB RAM standard (16GB optional) is generous and competitive.

The Android tablet software question. In 2024 this was a real concern. In 2026, for typical use, it is mostly resolved. Office (Microsoft 365 native Android), Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, Affinity tablet apps, Google Workspace, all major streaming apps, and high-end games all run well. Where it falls short is the pro creative tier: Procreate has no Android equivalent of equivalent quality (Infinite Painter and Concepts are good but not Procreate); Logic Pro has no Android equivalent at all; Final Cut Pro for iPad has no Android equivalent. For office work and casual creative use, Android tablets are fine. For pro creative work, iPad still wins.

DeX desktop mode is the genuine differentiator nobody else offers. Connect the Tab S11 Ultra to an external monitor (USB-C, wireless via Miracast, or wired DisplayPort) and DeX gives you a near-Windows-like multi-window desktop with the same Android apps running in proper resizable windows. With a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, this turns the tablet into a competent office desktop. iPad Stage Manager has improved but DeX has been doing this longer and more reliably.

The Australian buyer context. Samsung Direct runs aggressive trade-in programmes; trading in any older Galaxy Tab (back to S5e) typically drops the effective price by $300 to $500. JB Hi-Fi and The Good Guys offer competitive pricing without the trade-in friction; expect $1,999 to $2,099 routinely. Telstra and Optus 5G models add $250 to the sticker. Samsung's announced 7-year software update commitment (made in 2024) means OS updates through Android 22 in approximately 2032, which is the longest commitment any Android manufacturer offers. That changes the long-term value math: a Tab S11 Ultra you buy in 2026 will still be getting OS updates in 2032, matching iPad Pro's typical update lifespan.

The trade-offs versus the iPad Pro 13 M5. The Tab S11 Ultra is $100 cheaper, includes the pen Apple charges $229 for, has IP68 water resistance, microSD expandable storage, anti-reflective display coating, and DeX desktop mode. The iPad Pro has the better tandem OLED for high dynamic range (HDR) content, the M5 chip for sustained creative loads, and the iPadOS app ecosystem for pro creative work. For an Android-first buyer, the Tab S11 Ultra is the right answer. For an Apple-first buyer or a creative pro, iPad Pro wins.

The trade-offs versus the Surface Pro 12. The Surface is $600 cheaper but smaller, runs full Windows 11 instead of Android, and is genuinely a 2-in-1 laptop replacement rather than a tablet first. If you want a tablet, the Tab S11 Ultra is the right form factor at this price tier. If you want a Windows laptop replacement that occasionally tablets, the Surface Pro is the right answer.
