The Arlo Pro 5 is the only major security camera brand headquartered in Australia (Melbourne), so local support and warranty claims are easy. It pairs a sharp 2K HDR sensor and wide 160-degree view with the best night vision here: colour footage backed by an integrated spotlight. The catch is the Arlo Secure subscription, around $10 a month, which unlocks the person and vehicle detection. Best for buyers who want the most polished, easiest-to-use camera and do not mind the monthly fee.

Pros & Cons

What I Like

  • Arlo is Australian company (Melbourne HQ), local support & warranty peace of mind
  • Exceptional 2K HDR image quality and 160° FOV captures more detail
  • Colour night vision with integrated spotlight, best low-light performance
  • Works with Google Home, Alexa, and Apple HomeKit
  • No subscription required for basic recording, cloud storage included
  • Wireless & battery-powered, easy installation
  • Solar panel compatible for indefinite runtime

Could Be Better

  • Arlo Secure subscription ($9.99/month) needed for AI features like person/vehicle detection
  • Battery replacement is difficult and not user-serviceable
  • Camera designed to be replaced rather than repaired
  • Slightly higher price point than some competitors
  • Requires Arlo Smart Hub for local storage

My Review

The Arlo Pro 5 is the security camera to buy if you want a polished, no-fuss system from a company you can actually reach when something goes wrong. Arlo is Australian, with its headquarters in Melbourne, so local support and warranty are genuinely reassuring. At $329 it is not the cheapest, but it is one of the most complete wireless cameras you can put on a wall.

It shoots 2K High Dynamic Range (HDR) video across a wide 160-degree field of view, has colour night vision backed by an integrated spotlight, runs on a rechargeable battery with optional solar charging, and carries an IP65 weather rating. It works with Google Home, Alexa and Apple HomeKit, which almost nothing else here manages. The catch is the subscription, and it is the whole story with Arlo.

What the RefDat test lab found

Image quality is a strength. Daytime footage is sharp with accurate colour, and the colour night vision plus spotlight is the best low-light performance in this group, well ahead of the infrared-only rivals. Motion detection triggered reliably on our test runner with few false alarms, and the two-way audio works, though the speaker is on the quiet side. Setup is the easiest here. The honest weather note is occasional lens fogging on cold mornings, which clears as the day warms.

What owners actually report

Owners on Whirlpool and OzBargain rate the image quality, the easy setup and the local Australian support. The loudest watch-out, by a distance, is the Arlo Secure subscription: the useful artificial intelligence features like person and vehicle detection sit behind a roughly $10 a month plan, and owners who expected them included are frequently annoyed. The other recurring gripe is that the battery is not user-replaceable, so the camera is effectively designed to be replaced rather than repaired down the track.

Who should skip it? If you refuse to pay a monthly subscription for smart alerts, a local-storage camera like the Reolink Argus 4 Pro or Eufy S350 will suit you far better. For the best night vision and the easiest set-up with local support, the Arlo is excellent.

You will find it at JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman and Officeworks. OzBargain regularly posts deals on Arlo security bundles.

Australian Consumer Law (ACL): an outdoor security camera at $329 should reasonably last 5 to 8 years, with the consumer guarantees realistically covering 3 to 4, beyond Arlo's 2-year warranty. If the lens fogs permanently, the battery fails abnormally or the wireless connection stops working in that window, you have a claim. Outdoor electronics are more exposed to weather, but genuine faults are still covered. Take it to your retailer.

Bottom line: the most polished wireless camera here with the best night vision and local support, held back only by paywalled smart features. Highly recommended if you do not mind the subscription. Choose a local-storage rival if you do. RefDat score 3.9 out of 5.
