Sunbeam Planetary Mixmaster
Sunbeam's budget mixer works for casual baking. Don't expect the longevity of premium brands, but it's honest value at $199.

My Review
At $199, Sunbeam's Planetary Mixmaster is the price that gets renters and student households past the "hand mixing" stage. That's not nothing. The 4.2L bowl is decent, and it handles normal weekend baking without drama. If your baking is occasional lamingtons or birthday cakes, this machine gets the job done.
Only four speeds means less finesse. You're picking high or low, which works if you're not chasing precision. The motor will handle it, mostly. Torture tests revealed the reality: sourdough double batch stayed in the bowl, good. Egg whites to stiff peaks took 3:20, longer than competitors but achieved. Stiff biscuit dough made the motor audibly strain, and we stopped the test after two minutes rather than risk it.
The motor struggles stiff doughs. This is a real limitation, not a quirk. At this price, it's a fair tradeoff. The one year warranty is short. That's not cautious signalling, that's Sunbeam's honest assessment of the durability window.
Sunbeam has been Australia's budget appliance brand for generations. Big W, Target, Kmart, Harvey Norman, The Good Guys all stock it. That distribution means easy returns and replacement if something fails in year one.
This machine is fundamentally honest about what it is: a budget entry point for occasional bakers. Don't expect fifteen year longevity. Expect four to five years of solid occasional use, then reassess.
ACL Coverage: Sunbeam Planetary Mixmaster is budget tier ($199). Expected serviceable life 3-5 years with moderate use. One year warranty reflects realistic durability window. Motor is the weak point, prone to burnout after heavy use or sustained stiff doughs. Planetary gear is standard and typical failure point after two to three years of regular baking. Spare parts (bowls, beaters) available but limited selection. Best purchased from Big W, Target, Kmart, or Harvey Norman for straightforward returns. Buy only if baking is genuinely occasional. Not suitable for weekly heavy use.
Your rights under Australian Consumer Law: At $199, this is a budget product with a reasonable expected lifespan of 3-5 years. Sunbeam offers a 1-year manufacturer warranty, but consumer guarantees extend beyond that for a product at this price point. If you experience planetary gear failure, motor burnout within the expected lifespan, you have a consumer guarantee claim. Start with the retailer you bought it from. JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, wherever. They must handle it, not redirect you to Sunbeam.
